What can you say about the Bombing at Maramag Bukidnon last December 9, 2014. The said attack was the cause of death. Eleven of the students of the Central Mindanao University (CMU) we're killed to the said bombing.
According to InterAksyon.com The online news portal of TV5
(UPDATE 10 - 11:54 p.m.) MANILA, Philippines - Eleven died and more than 40 were hurt when a bus exploded in Bukidnon before 6 p.m., Tuesday, December 9.
Reports from the Armed Forces of the Philippines' Eastern Mindanao Command reaching Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City said the explosion happened at about 5:45 p.m. The military said most of the victims were students, who were about to go home when the explosion took place.
Gold Star Daily earlier reported that an explosive device went off at the back of the RTMI bus.
Nine of the 11 fatalities -- five men and four women -- died on the spot, according to the local Explosives and Ordnance Disposal team of the Philippine National Police. Two others, who were bus passengers, died at the Lavinia General Hospital in Valencia, Bukidnon.
A separate radio report quoting authorities said five of the fatalities were students.
Forty-three people were hurt from the incident, according to a report from the Philippine News Agency.
The military said some victims were brought to Valencia City Hospital for medical treatment.
Others were rushed to the Adventist Medical Center in Valencia City, according to News5.
Four of the fatalities were identified as Jun Rey Valdesco, John Bernard Kunahap, and Emma Valiente, all of Bukidnon and students of CMU, and Anita Santillan, 54, also of Bukidnon.
Inspector Jeselle Longakit, Bukidnon police spokesperson, said an improvised bomb with mobile phone as trigger mechanism was used in the explosion. She said the bomb was apparently hidden in a sack that was placed in the vehicle's overhead baggage rack.
Longakit said most of the passengers were heading home from a fiesta celebration in nearby Wao town in Lanao del Sur when the December 9 incident took place in Maramag.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attack that occurred more than a month after another RTMI bus also exploded in Bukidnon leaving four people wounded.
The bus firm had been receiving extortion letters from lawless elements asking protection money.
Superintendent Bernardo Mendoza, spokesperson of the Police Regional Office in Northern Mindanao, said the bombing appeared to be the handiwork of the breakaway group of the Cotabato-based Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters.
Police in Maramag are now conducting post-blast investigation.
Authorities are hunting down those behind the blast, who were captured by a CCTV camera in Poblacion, Maramag where the bus left before proceeding to Valencia City from Wao, Lanao del Sur, said Longakit.
The BIFF is a breakaway Muslim extremist group opposed to peace talks between the government and the main Muslim rebel group, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
Ten people were also killed when a bomb exploded aboard a bus operated by the same company in Mindanao in 2010, which was blamed on an extortion scheme also linked to Muslim extremists.
Armed groups have proliferated in the southern Philippines since Muslim guerrillas began fighting in the 1970s to set up a separate state for the Muslim minority of the largely Christian Philippines.
Among the Muslim outlaw groups still active in the south is the BIFF and the Abu Sayyaf, an Al-Qaeda-linked group blamed for the worst terror attacks in Philippine history.
Both groups have been accused of carrying out bombings, often using improvised explosives.
The main Islamic rebel group, the MILF, signed a peace agreement with the government in March but the Abu Sayyaf and the BIFF are not part of the accord. With a report from Agence France-Presse
